Zanzibar current account balance improved to a surplus of $32.6 million (about Sh45.6 billion) in the year ending in March this year, according to Bank of Tanzania April monthly economic report.
The report shows that, the surplus shoot up from a deficit of $2.7 million (about Sh3.7 billion) during in the 12-month period ending on March last year.
The report said that, the surplus arose from current transfers and exports proceeds, noting that during the period, transfers increased by $19.2 million to $62.7 million, whereas export of goods and services increased by $13.3 million to $125.1 million
The central bank bulletin added that, the Isle’s export of goods and services amounted to $125.1 million, compared to $111.8 million was recorded in the year ending March 2009.
“The increase was largely associated with a rise in services receipts to $99.0 million from $95.5 million during the period,” reads the report in part.
The value of cloves exported during the period under review increased to $13.0 million from $4.8 million, while the rise in cloves export was on account of increase in the volume of the crop that rose to 3.6 metric tons from 1.5 metric tones.
The report showed that exports of seaweeds and manufactured goods also increased to $2.9 million and $5.2 million from $2.1 million and $4.8 million respectively.
Imports of goods declined to $102.0 million in the year ending March from $124.2 million in the corresponding period in 2009, mainly due to decrease in the value of oil, industrial raw materials and other consumer goods.
The value of imported oil declined to $26.9 million in the period under review, compared to $33.7 million, while that of industrial raw materials fell to $7.7 million from $11.6 million in the year ending March 2009.
Meanwhile, during the month under review, the value exports of goods shipped from Zanzibar was $1.4 million in March 2010, slightly lower than $1.5 million in the preceding month.
Also service receipts amounted to $9.3 million in the month under review, being higher than $8.7 million recorded in the previous month.
On the other hand, value of goods shipped into Zanzibar was $7.8 million in the month of March below $8.0 million recorded in February 2010, owing to a decrease in import value of oil.
The services account balance improved to a surplus of $2.9 million in the month under review, from $1.8 million registered in February, this year, said the report.

@ Muunguja. Dont you not realised that before its on the AIR!!!!?…That is the result of your government CCM SMZ. When we said that Zanzibar need to change the whole system of these cabinets;ad give others party a try. You (guys) thought we are CUF/ Wapemba & unti-Unioun.However, I am happy these issues have been rivealed, can you see it now,
Well you have your relatve in the current goverment!? Offcause you arenot alone but dont you fee it a shame…
Give us an ideas my friend, what Zanzibaris can they do now; In order to tackle these sticky situations haaaa!!!!…? Dont you dare to live us at the Cross Road. These could not happened if CUF was in power 1995.
Its pretty funy that, you compared the SMZ debts with your own current income.You have to agree that now we dont have a good leeder in Zanzibar; and we need to remove CCM out of Power right!!!!!
Weeeeel….I am looking forward to hear your nouble answer.
@ZAMKO
you must be a psychic my friend .how do you know cuf will make everything better in zanzibar.I know the frustration of you guys about polical situation but to be honest with you the problems of zanzibar started from very deep.you can have a good leader but without the cooperation from civil servants and all other peoples in general the country will be the some but with different pary and leader.the corruption,laziness,selfishness,greedy roho mbaya ,poverty those things will remain for a long time in zanzibar .
my advise to you stay where you are my friend enjoy the life of uk work hard for yourself maendeleo ya binadamu huletwa na mtu mwenyewe.naver trust the politicians they speak too much but with less action ,I know you love cuf and maalim seif too much ,but don’t expect anything major even if they win.gonna be the some old shit you know african politics .I’m in america with my wife and 2 kids guess what ?I will naver go back to live there .holiday once a year thats fine, zanzibar is very nice place if you got money .the beach is just amazing the last time i went there it was on june 2008 had a really good time went all the nice places i used to dream about when i was young kid.took my entire family to a picknick with a very nice biriani with organic mango and pineaple juice.
the funny things about zanzibar politics is .we wananchi always fighting against each others because of different belive in ideology. but politician are just enjoy themselves which is wrong .why cant we join together and started to kick our politician to the back side wether its ccm or cuf or chadema or jhazi asilia or ZAMKO NATIONAL PARTY.
@Muunguja:
I thin you are brain worsh because I asked you one thing and you answer another thing.You havent answer non of my questions yet….I asked you to give us (Zanzibaris)a roughly ideas on the situations of economic crisis. What should zanzibaris do in order to solve the current problems????? Instead you gave me your life story, thus its non of my bussines & its bloody non sanse Muunguja.
The resons why I asked you because you are the (besternt) of the best at critisis peoples ideas and defending SMZ CCM. I know Zanzibar has a lovely beach..A languid sea and the color of purest emerald which sorounded by the lovely, softly whitely sand. Thus why watanganyika wenzio (original) wanalala kwenye beaches. You dont need to tell me that because my 10th generation and myself was born,grew up there; despite that, every second year, I visit my home Island.
Not only I love CUF(Maalim Seif), but also I love everybody who wanted Zanzibar and Zanzibaris peples to have a better life standard,education,political stability,economic development,humanity,culture and religioun as its once was.
I think you are one of the oportunisty person I have ever heared about. How can you said this statement…..”I’m in america with my wife and 2 kids guess what ?I will naver go back to live there .holiday once a year thats fine,” That was Stupid!!!!!.
Will you Give me a break please, remember there is no place like home.Do you think to have (green cards/pasport) or remaining in USA would make you be the same person as Americans (treated the same)? And you feel proud about that…, coming from Unguja Uwanja wa Mpira wa Mao Setungi (chambilecho jamaa zangu). And you said you cant go back home….You are Limbukeni Muunguja. By rimnding you I am notin UK as you think.
You are right that, political leaders are all the same, But if we give Maalim with his team just a try he wll fix most of the major probems. Offcause there is many problem, but CUF they have the brain/ tools to rule the peoples of Zanzibar and bring back its Identity.Zanzibaris can still remember when Maalim Seif was in the power!!! in 1986-87. Zanzibar bergan to imaged from the dark whole (Tanganyika kwenu) and Zanzibar it was on “HAY DAYS” again and Maalim & Ali Hassan they ware only rained for one year.Lakini Zanzibar ilibadilka.Sasa wacha kutuletea utumbo wako, CCM can not rule but Ruig it the country
Today you are also agree about laziness, selfishness, curruption, greedy and so on. There was time, here at mzalendo blog, we discused abot Maalim Seif that he is good person/leader, offcause he has a weekness like all other human being. But his ruling strategy against corruptions, laziness he was good on that when he was a Chief Minister. We still remembered he used to disciplined some of the employers and organisation. But you guys oooooh he was BIARS” because he was disciplined some of the Zanzibaris organisation and leziness.
You and others stupid peoples (akina Shamhuna you said oooooh he was BIARS” because he was disciplined some of the Zanzibaris organisation and employers.you even managed to critisised him and said hes a DICTATOR.
Who is a dictator someone who didnt won election and cling into the power by force?…Or someone who won election and didnt get a chance to rule and show the difference.If its Presidential position evenMasauni and Nahodha want it.you guys you hat Wapembas that its your big problem Muunguja na timu yako ya CCM.
Halafu unasemawananchi tuna-fight among ourselv. But I think you are confused. Ni nyinyi watumunaotumiliwana CCM ndio munao anza dhulma. Na wengine wakisema mukawaona wajinga.
Finaly Kitimbakwiri is a kitimbakwiri, oportunisty is an oportunisty, Where ever he may be. And I think you are among them and today I bealive it. You are among those who are only need to fill up there big belis like CCM SMZ. I hope you will go back to school and getsome more knowledge.To be in USA didnt help you to have an ideas knowladge and hope for our Country, Identity, Culture.
You are the whone hoplesness you think Zanzibar will always remain the same, but you are wrong.Zanzibar will change for the better and not for the worse. And I hope ASW will elp those who will abolish CCM & its rule and established not “ZAMKO NATIONAL PARTY”. But U.P.N.P.
@zamko
this is why we naver agreed me and you.in life peoples got choices and like different things if I don’t like to go back zanzibar its my decision.no one can force me .you like CUF and maalim seif thats your choices and i cant change you.but I’m intittled to my opinions .
you are very angry person and you got tendency of loosing your temper.all I can say to you is FIMBO YA MBALI HAIUWI NYOKA cha kufanya nenda kule zanzibar kaendeleze mapambano kwa vitendo.stop being angry with your computer screen this just a blog peoples exchanging ideas.you don’t have to be abusive you have to remember that we all have different ideology fo what we are thinking.some peoples think KARUME is good president just because of ONE MINUTE MUAFAKA but you know what I judge him for ten years he has been in power which is for my opinion he failed.
sometime I don’t understand you cause you mixed religion with politics which i think is wrong.you coming with nice aya of QURAN and then the next minutes unachochea VIOLENCE .nakumbuka ulisema wale wamakonde waloshikwa na issue ya ZAN ID kwamba wakatwe mashikio alafu wachomwe moto.sasa huko kama si kuchanganyikiwa nini ndugu yangu?ISLAM IS A RELIGION OF PEACE.
now go and drink some water and respect others peoples opinion.CALM DOWN MAN!!
Muunguja: fromthe bottom of my heart, I am sorry if i have been upseting you my brother. i wanted you to understand that I didnt mean to do so personal.Yale yalikua ni maoni yangu juu ya mawazo yako na ideology zako. Na sio wewe binafsi yako asMuunguja.
its true that everyone have her/his own choice, and that was your choice ad we shouldrespec that. But Remember you are in the blog and you give outyour adeas/view; Ndio inatupelekea nasisi tukachangia view na maoni yetu kwanjia ya critisism kama zile nilizozitoa mimi. kwamba hayo mawzoyako kwa mtu kama mimi na kwawakati kama huu nayaona si ya uzalendo.
But i was not agresive or abusive , how could I?…. i dont know you and you dont know me anyway.kama ulivosema hii ni blog tunatoa mawazo yetu mbali mbali mengine makali na mengine yana mturch mtu na anaona amekua attacked personal.Lakini moyoni mwangu/au wetu hatuko hivo. I honestly respect your choice as an individual, LETIRALY not mzalendo wa blog. Ndio maana nikawa mara NYING NA CRITISISED MAWAZO YA WATU WENGINE.
I THINK ITS GOOD TO HAVE DIFFERENT DEAS AND A HARSH CRITISISM BUT DONT TINK ITS PERSONALY.
i think for the first time we have been REACH THE agreement and now I would buy a American bugger with a light cocaCola. You have to chear up and I will live you alone.
